A Brief History of Monmouth, Oregon
Monmouth’s story began in 1853, when settlers from Monmouth, Illinois arrived in the Willamette Valley. They set aside 640 acres for a new town and a college “under the auspices of the Christian Church.” Proceeds from land sales funded Monmouth University—and as part of the town’s founding values, the sale of alcohol was banned.
The city incorporated in 1856, and in 1882, the State of Oregon took over the struggling college, renaming it the Oregon State Normal School at Monmouth. Today, that school is Western Oregon University (WOU), a key part of the city’s identity.
For 144 years, Monmouth was “dry”—no alcohol sales allowed. That changed in January 2003, when residents voted to lift the ban, making Monmouth the last dry municipality in the Western U.S.
