Settlers first came to the Aumsville area in 1842 as missionaries. By 1863 there were several settlers in the area. The Aumsville area was often called Hoggum as there were so many pigs raised in the area. Mr. Turner built a flour mill on the family farm in what would become Aumsville. Mr. Turner's son-in-law, Amos Davis, died before the mill was completed. Mr. Turner was very fond of him and often called him Aumus. Mr. Turner named the city Aumusville after him, and it eventually got shortened to Aumsville
Aumsville is a small rural residential town with a population of just over 3,000. It is located nine miles east of Salem. Aumsville is attractive to many families for its affordable housing and close proximity to Salem. Many of the residents of Aumsville live there on acreage. It is still an agriculturally based town and residents are drawn there for its more affordable farm lands.
Aumsville hosts an annual corn festival as agriculture has always been a large part of the community.
