In the 1800's, the first settlers came to the banks of the Silver Creek. In 1846, James Smith and John Barger established a sawmill on the creek in 1846, and a small settlment called Milford, began to grow. In 1854, Milford was abandoned and the businesses that had started there moved downstream to the current site of the city of Silverton. Silverton was incorporated in 1885. By 1894, the population was nearly 900.
Silverton is known for its charm. It attacts residents with its older homes filled with character. Silverton is well known for its many festivals including, such as the Mother's Day Wildflower Show, the Iris Jubilee and the Strawberry Festival. Cooley's Iris Display Garden also provides a colorful reminder of Silverton's roots.
Silverton homes have appreciated signficantly over the years. Some new construction has occured and it remains a desirable place to live. With an excellent local hospital, good schools, and small town charm, Silverton is a wonderful place to live.
