Directly west of Independence in Polk County, Oregon is the city of Monmouth, famous for being the seat of the 150-year-old Western Oregon University. Settled in 1853 by pioneers from Monmouth, Illinois, the establishment of a college was part of the city’s plans from the very beginning. Thus Western Oregon University, originally named Monmouth University, was founded almost simultaneously at 1856.
A college town set in the pastoral beauty of the Willamette Valley, the city is a peaceful, family-oriented community. In recent years, a growing number of relocating families have been rediscovering the charms of Monmouth, Oregon real estate.
